Financial Layovers

July 05, 2022

I don’t really like to fly. It's not that I’m afraid to fly. I just don’t enjoy the experience of going to the airport, secure checks and delays and layovers are the worst. And if you’re traveling internationally you have to deal with customs and now COVID documentation and testing. I just don’t enjoy it. I have always felt that the travel is the real cost of a true adventure.

When I travel, I’m sure that I’m like most others in that I want the most direct route possible with the fewest layovers. The smoother the travel the better and I’m willing to pay a little more for that. It’s a less stressful experience and a more efficient use of my time.

Investing can be thought of in much the same way. The smoother you can make the trip the more enjoyable the experience. The fewer “financial layovers” your money experiences the more efficient the portfolio.

Travel has changed over the years. Not so much the vehicle but the environment in which we travel in. Sure there have been technological upgrades to aircraft but that hasn’t had a huge impact on the average jet liner experience. But 9/11 did. And COVID has as well.

Again, we can think of investing much the same way. The environment in which markets now exist pose new and unique challenges. We can meet those challenges with additional levels of diversification that we call “Investing Evolved.” This approach can help smooth out the travel plans you have for your money and improve the investing experience.
